Lionni's business training gradually receded into the background as his interest in art and design grew. He was born in Holland in 1910 of Dutch parents, and although his education did not include formal art courses (in fact, he has a doctorate in economics from the University of Genoa), he spent much of his free time as a child in Amsterdam's museums, teaching himself to draw. Leo Lionni has gained international renown for his paintings, graphic designs, illustrations, and sculpture, as well as for his books for children. Leo Lionni died in October of 1999 at his home in Tuscany, Italy, at the age of 89. He received the 1984 American Institute of Graphic Arts Gold Medal and was a four-time Caldecott Honor Winner-for Inch by Inch, Frederick, Swimmy, and Alexander and the Wind-Up Mouse. Leo Lionni wrote and illustrated more than 40 highly acclaimed children's books.

Book 1 (of 9) in the bestelling, multi-award winning BEYOND series.Īll Noelle Cunningham has ever wanted was a life beyond-beyond her stifling role as a prim and proper councilman's daughter, and beyond the walls of the patriarchal city of Eden, the only remnants of safety in a world destroyed by solar storms decades earlier. Deryn Sharp is a commoner, disguised as a boy in the British Air Service. All he has is a battletorn war machine and a loyal crew of men. For fans of the series, it is important to note that the author at his book signing said that he was going to be doing another book, but it might be more of a field-guide. The Leviathan series is these three novels: The story: Prince Aleksander, would-be heir to the Austro-Hungarian throne, is on the run. Unfortunately, (and this is a bit of a spoiler) even though Alek finds out that she's a girl, the fact is not revealed to the captain, the British, the soldiers, etc., which is not a great lesson of morals, but it would be impossible, with the plot as it is, to do otherwise. Deryn is a brave and resourceful female character, who, since girls aren't allowed to serve on the British Airships, disguises herself as a boy. Throughout the book, Alek is determined to end WWI (Fun fact, the archduke DID have kids - three of them! - though none was named Alek, according to Scott Westerfield.), and in his determination to do so, is shammed by Nikola Tesla, who parents should know dies at the end of the book, which is a warp on history. Nora Barlow, and is afraid Barlow will discover her secret. Deryn is surprised to learn the boffin is a woman, Dr. When I went to see the author talk about this book, he mentioned that the way technology evolved in this world, many of the manufactured beasts were designed to be similar to things that have been created. The Leviathan s mission is to transport a top British boffin, or scientist, and a secret package to Constantinople. Also, Goliath includes a couple new beasts. Like the rest of the Leviathan books, Goliath was set in a sort of alternate WWI, where technology evolved differently. Goliath was a stunning "end" to the Leviathan Trilogy. But distrust and treachery from all sides leave Velia and Jape in a fight against their own people to keep each other alive-and to ultimately save both Earth and Risnar from total destruction. Grabbing a curvy handful of a human wasn’t part of the plan, but he has no intention of letting her distract him from his need for vengeance-no matter how much he aches to make her his. Believing Earthlings had killed his fellow warriors, Jape Bolep is determined to destroy Earth’s access to Risnar once and for all. Now that she’s assigned to study the top secret portal linking Earth to other worlds, she’ll get her chance. Engineer Velia Farrah always wanted to see an alien up close. Equally, a lot of us have a fear of the other side of the barricade – can you really be a feminist and read the Vogue? How can you be a feminist and listen to rap music which objectifies women?
